The 9th Asian Games were held from November 19, 1982 to December 4, 1982 in Delhi, India. India managed to finish 5th in the overall standings, with 13 golds, 19 silvers and 25 bronze medals. Appu, an elephant calf was the mascot for the games. To commemorate the Asiad being held at Delhi, The Government of India released a commemorative Rs. 2 coin:
